TAKEN, the second Contemporary Heritage commission, awarded to contemporary classical composer Ailís Ní Ríain, is a unique sound installation in the Castle Keep. TAKEN is inspired by the story of the Lancashire Witches and imagines how the 12 individuals might have felt during their final four months in captivity whilst awaiting trial. In 2012 the region will reflect on the 400th anniversary of the Lancashire witch trials. Ailís spent time with 10 local women and 2 men and recorded each person humming a song which was personal and poignant to them. The recordings were then interwoven with an acoustic harp into the composition. Contemporary Heritage: A new way of seeing is an ambitious programme of site-responsive artist commissions at stunning historic sites across Lancashire. TAKEN is commissioned by Mid Pennine Arts in collaboration with Lancashire County Council. TAKEN launches on Saturday 18th June, 1pm to 4pm. Free event, family and friends welcome. Refreshments from 1pm, TAKEN will be introduced by Ailís at 1.30pm and can be experienced from 2pm onwards.
