A group show of new work by Carolyn Barrett, Annie Lord, Roween Suess, Richard Taylor and Catriona Whiteford: part of Embassy’s Annuale 2013. Recast queries the proximity collections of artists have to one another in a studio environment as a curatorial act, a mode of creating new work or a reforming of practise within a collective group. As the exhibition is part of Embassy’s Annuale festival, it also looks to set this proximity within the context of a wider network of grassroots endeavour in the city of Edinburgh. The result of a curatorial exercise Recast is generative of connections made between new works produced in the studios at 11D Murieston Lane, which is currently an open plan working space. The activity of making in this communal setting produces the show itself, as each artist recasts their own practice next to that of the other – unearthing similarities, highlighting differences or simply reflecting on an observational level; to produce sculptural, assembled, photographic and paper-based works.
