ArtLacuna is pleased to present the premiere of Small Wonders, an immersive 3D film exploring the beauty and danger of micro-organisms and protozoons living within the surface-water of lakes & ponds. The film is the result of a collaboration between the artist filmmaker Katie Goodwin and microbiologist and UCL Honorary Senior Lecturer Terence M Preston and was produced over summer 2013. Drawing from over 40 years of Preston’s research into the movements of these tiny organisms, some of which are human pathogens, whose habitat cover the majority of the Earth, the artist is creating an abstract-narrative short film. Using enticing microscopic imagery on 16mm film from a then cutting-edge 1972 scientific experiment, cine footage of children fishing and swimming in ponds and lakes and 3D projection technologies the artist hopes to transfer this wonder and fascination for an unseen world to the viewer. An abstract surround-sound audio track of fragments of recorded conversations with Terence, a compelling and enthusiastic storyteller, will also be created in collaboration with composer Wayne Urquhart. ArtLacuna will also host a Q&A panel discussion and the film will tour to further arts venues, universities & film festivals at home and abroad. This project has been made possible by the generosity of the Wellcome Trust and Terence M. Preston.
