The oldest church in the City of London, All Hallows is awash with maritime references including votive boats and windows, the Book of Remembrance for those lost at sea and a ship’s bell rung for the dead. It is located adjacent to Trinity House and the Tower of London and lies in sight of the river. Navis, the Latin word for boat, is the root-word for the nave of a church as well as for the navy.

‘Adrift’ is a sculptural installation by Hew Locke, who has been making or drawing boats since he first started making art. They are beautiful, a symbol of hope and protection, and a thing that can carry you to a new life. ‘Adrift’ evokes the final journey over the River Styx, Viking funeral boats, or Ancient Egyptian funerary barques. Locke imagines this boat as having been on a long journey, lost and abandoned.
