Keith Wilson, current artist in residence at S1 Artspace, tonight hosts the first in a series of summer events at the Sheffield gallery and studio space.

The sculptor, whose Steles (Waterworks) installation forms part of the Olympic Park, is using his residency to work on the final form of ‘Calendar’ (2011), a galvanised steel structure made from numerous cubic units. The finished piece creates a series of shelf-like units that, like the days on a calendar, can be filled or left empty. As well as discussing the work, Wilson will be inviting audience members to contribute to its completion.

An aspect of the residency involves Wilson encouraging critical discussion based on the concerns of the Unit One group founded in 1933 by the artist Paul Nash. The group included key British artists, architects and critics of the period, including Barbara Hepworth, Ben Nicholson, Henry Moore, Edward Wadsworth and Herbert Read. It was concerned with promoting British modernism and revitalising the country’s art scene.

Wilson will also be introducing a short film about his Steles project for the Cultural Olympiad 2012 (see below).
