The Contemporary Glass Society 2013 conference will focus on the tension between creativity and process in a sector known for employing a huge variety of techniques.
Taking place in the newly refurbished National Glass Centre, Sunderland in October, Glass Skills: Exploring the Fusion of Art and Technique will include exhibitions, artist demonstrations and an opportunity to explore an area rich in glassmaking history. The event forms part of a year long programme Glass Skills 2013, which has also included a series of linked exhibitions across the UK, The Unbroken Line, celebrating the glassmaker’s skill.
Conference speakers include Markku Salo, Keke Cribbs, Dr Jack Dawson, Wendy Fairclough, Geoff Mann, Diane Peacock and Luke Jerram. Jessamy Kelly will host a seminar on approaching galleries and Cate Watkinson will lead a Q&A session with a panel of architectural glass artists Bridget Jones, Laura Johnston and Rachel Welford.
Other highlights include a Glass PechaKucka event involving glassmakers who keep ancient skills alive whilst adapting them in creating innovative and original contemporary glass art. For the event, 20 Contemporary Glass Society members will each talk for four minutes whilst showing a selection of twelve images, with each image displayed for 20 seconds.
