As many of you know, one of Blue Monkey Network’s aims is to provide opportunities for artists to get together and exchange knowledge, experience and ideas. Sometimes we think it’s also really useful to offer opportunities for artists to meet and get to know some of the people who make things happen in the arts in Sussex.
For our event in May, we’re really pleased to be able to introduce you to some people who are at the heart of arts activity in the South East: Brian Cass, Towner’s Head of Exhibitions, Jessica Courtney Bennett, Coastal Culture Trail Project Coordinator, and Cara Courage, the new Network Manager for Contemporary Visual Arts Network (CVAN) South East.
Brian, Jessica and Cara will talk about their roles within their organisations, their plans for 2016 and beyond, and ways in which their organisations work with artists. We hope you can join us for the evening and find out more about the arts in the south east and how you can get involved.
Brian Cass recently joined Towner as Head of Exhibitions. Prior to Towner, Brian was Curator for Creative Arts at Trinity College, Dublin, responsible for managing the Turner Prize and delivering it in Derry in 2013, and held Curator and Project Manager roles with the Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin.
Jessica Courtney Bennett is the Project Coordinator of the Coastal Culture Trail which links the Towner Art Gallery in Eastbourne to De La Warr Pavilion in Bexhill and to Jerwood Gallery in Hastings. Jessica grew up in Hastings and returned to her home town in 2014 to start a family. Having experienced the East Sussex coastline as a resident and a visitor Jessica understands the appeal to spend time on our strip of coastline. Through the Coastal Culture Trail project Jessica has discovered what a culturally rich area this is and is working hard to market it to an audience who might otherwise choose St Ives over East Sussex for their holidays.
Cara Courage is Network Manager for Contemporary Visual Arts Network, South East (CVAN SE) and an arts curator and project manager, based in Brighton. Cara has worked in the sector regionally and internationally for around 20 years and has recently completed a PhD focusing on social practice arts in place.
