Popular Isle of Wight artist Andrew Dowden will be showing his work at Quarr Abbey Art Gallery from Thursday, 17th to Tuesday, 22nd September. This is an opportunity to view Andrew’s work and buy directly from the artist.
Andrew exhibits at the abbey annually, and at this exhibition Andrew will be showing a collection of his handmade, hand-carved ceramics with particular emphasis on ‘Dots, Dashes, Buildings and Boats’, together with complementary textured wall art.
Ideas and designs for his ceramic work come from various sources including nature, architecture and archaeology. ‘Pottery has been made on the Isle of Wight since Neolithic times,‘ says Andrew. ‘Learning about pottery and actually working through the different stages of each making process, has made me appreciate this ancient art. I primarily make pieces for my own interest and satisfaction but it pleases me to know that people who buy my work appeciate it too.’ Ceramic tile panels, wall plaques and standing forms such as Tumbling Squares, Wheel Forms, and Black Standing Stones, will be on show.
Surface texture and form are Andrew’s main interest in ceramics, and textured designs have also been incorporated onto his oil-painted wall art. A carpenter for 20 years, Andrew made teak frames from a 1950s sideboard.
Quarr Abbey is situated on the main road between Ryde and Wootton. The gallery will be open from 10am-5pm each day. Admission is free.
