Nine ceramic artists from the North West are celebrating National Ceramics Week with an exhibition at the Royal Exchange Theatre craft shop. Much of their work is handbuilt without the use of the wheel, fully exploiting the colour, texture and form that this endlessly varied medium allows. The work of Catrin Mostyn Jones has been described as ‘dazzlingly beautiful, like a neon hallucination of a coral reef’. She and Brigitte Soltau exhibited last October at the Great Northern Contemporary craft event in Manchester. Brigitte’s textural sculptures relate to urban archaeology of the Hulme estate in Manchester. Steven Dixon is internationally well known for his politically inspired work and he is research fellow at Manchester Metropolitan University. Alex McErlain, is senior lecturer at MMU. His thrown work, writings and film work have earned a reputation for excellence. Sue Crossfield’s distinctive ceramics are inspired by marine life and other natural forms. Annie Tortora makes ceramic still life vignettes exploring colour and texture. Gordon Cooke will be showing stoneware and porcelain inspired by Portuguese landscapes. The Raku work by Jacqui Atkin is tactile and covetable. Smoky grays fading to black and white. Visitors to the Royal Exchange will be familiar with Paul Smith’s figurative work, described by art critic Sister Wendy Becket as ‘magical art, pure, humorous and strong’.
