Millais Off-Site Projects has commissioned artist Victoria Wareham to create a new site-specific installation in Unit 26 of the Bargate Mall. In response to the ethereal nature of the Mall, which she says feels is eerily reminiscent of a ghost town, Victoria is working with local musicians Brian Hooper and Jeff Henry, writers of the album ‘Southampton in Song’. She has taken historical songs about Southampton, creating a “phantom choir”. In collaboration with Brian and Jeff and a choir of singers, and with The SoCo Community Music Project, Victoria will create a vocal quartet adaptation that will be recorded and performed in Unit 26, with each vocal part recorded as an individual track. As the music is recorded, the performers will be filmed both pre- and post-performance. The result will be an immersive exhibition of sound and film shown alongside other work by the artist.
