Continuing our ‘Occupation: Free Art Space for Free Education’ season, Heather Gilberthorpe presents ‘To My Knowledge’. ‘To My Knowledge’ aims to facilitate the sharing of knowledge by inviting visitors to write anonymously, in a book, the knowledge which they’d like to share, whether it is an old saying, a family tradition, a tip to make everyday life easier, a fact learnt at school or a secret. The knowledge will then be transcribed onto the walls of the gallery, until the space is gradually filled with handwritten words. At the end of the exhibition, the gallery walls will be painted, the book will be destroyed and the shared knowledge will be lost.“The sharing of knowledge is an intrinsic part of life. The value and pleasure of education and the acquisition of knowledge are responsible for today’s societies and cultures. Our selectivity and valuation of ‘knowledge’ is a personal journey; an aspect that is often lost in communication in an age of great societal change. How often does one read another’s handwriting?”
