Anna Borowicz, ‘Studio’. Artist of the Week – My practise grew from a concern for the basic human need to belong, notions of home subverted by feelings of detachment. The fragmentation arising in the world overloaded with illusions of choice. I have been exploring these concepts through processes of constructing, collaging or layering objects, images and meanings that imply underlying quasi-narratives. Experimenting with spatial ambiguity of interiors where misaligned walls suggest rooms in-between and mirrored surfaces reflect non-existing spaces. The preoccupation with space and architecture arises alongside a concern for the viewer’s position within the work. One is confronted with the choice of singular/multiple gazes, the play of interior/exterior and the illusions of solid/ephemeral. Theatrical elements, layers of irony and immediate constructions are interwoven with precise critical meaning.
