Sunday 22nd May 2011, 12-4pm
The Prince Albert in Studio A6 will be open from 6pm on Saturday 21st May 2011 (buzzer entry).
Curators in Residence at Westgate Studios Project Space Alice Bradshaw and Bob Milner present the first solo show by Nottingham based artist Beth Shapeero.
Beth Shapeero explores the nature and physicality of liquid materials (paints, varnishes, oils) through painting, sculpture and installation works.
Strategically using repetition and controlling pre-determined elements, Beth works within defined parameters to concentrate on playful experimentation. An ambitious scale draws attention to the physicality of the materials, inviting the viewer to move around the work, taking in the variations in surface and texture and engaging with the work on a sensory level.
Through negotiating contrasts between the perfect and the imperfect, Beth conveys the raw and beautiful qualities of paint.
“Working with poured paint I’m fascinated by the way household gloss forms a skin and remains wet underneath; once the skin is formed and air doesn’t reach the paint below it stays viscous forever.”
