PREVIEW AND BOOK LAUNCH FRIDAY 17 JUNE, 6-8PM. Traverse is the inaugural exhibition at new Bristol gallery, Geneva Stop. Traverse features new video work by Close & Remote and the book launch of ‘Manual For Marginal Places’, which includes text by Emma Cocker and images by Sophie Mellor and Simon Poulter. Marginality is explored by the two video works ‘Traverse’ and ‘Kit’. ‘Traverse’, a three-screen work by Close and Remote (2010), uses sound to trace the visual narrative as it journeys the margins between industry and nature in the urban settings of Los Angeles, Barrow-in-Furness and New Mexico. ‘Kit’, a video work by Sophie Mellor (2010) uses a simple light emitting diode, powered by a urine fuelled battery, that in turn is set against the New Mexico ‘mesa’ landscape. The overall effect is quieting and chronistic in form. ‘Manual for Marginal Places’ is a textbook for exploring the peripheral, acknowledging marginal acts as well as marginal places. The reader is invited to move away from the centre, examining the borderlands and reflective spaces of the margins. ‘Manual for Marginal Places’ will be on sale throughout the exhibition and can also be ordered via www.closeandremote.net
