“As sensory beings we are affected by the world we live in; we interact with our surroundings and are conditioned by them. New surroundings generate new sensations…..For me it is important to engage with the creative process outside consciousness.” John Gibbons FRBS The RBS sculpture forecourt exhibits Presence/Look, a towering stainless steel sculpture that quietly stands. Its surface a poetic encounter between material and light; reflects and changes as you move around it. The smaller sculptures in the Salon gallery inspired by Gibbons’ recent solo exhibition: “John Gibbons: Portraits”, at the National Portrait Gallery, takes us deeper and further along his journey into the nature of “Presence”. A new set of ink and acrylic drawings on Melinex, are further confirmation of these interests and announces the interplay between his sculpture and drawing through line, colour and transparency. Gibbons’ opens our awareness to the every day aspects of the world in which we live. Paradoxically there is a profound engagement with what is felt but remains hidden, un-revealed. “This comes from an unknown inner source; and then, having acquired physical form, it is offered to the viewer. Delivered from an area of experience shared by all, it expresses a truth both intimate and hidden, yet universal.” Paul Moorhouse
