Open 2011, which is produced by Brighton Photo Fringe, is an ambitious project combining a photographic exhibition, a collection of texts and a full programme of events in the North Gallery. It brings together artists and a team of curators from across the globe to examine current photographic practice and to test its traditional boundaries. The gallery will contain the work of nine photographic artists selected through an open submission process. Inspired by popular culture, sculpture, archival processes and notions of ritual, the work encourages us to question our assumptions about the role of photography in contemporary culture. Set within the exhibition will be a ‘reading room’ and a stimulating range of free events, including artists’ talks, discussions, workshops and networking activities.
