Tenderpixel is pleased to present ‘Gestalt’, the first solo-show in London for German artist Tina Hage. This new series by Hage is a timely reflection of the many scenes we have seen recently from around the world. However, it is necessary for us to also consider the original German meaning of the word which simply means “form” or to “take shape”. Like any true observation, Tina Hage’s ‘Gestalt’ series is a collection of positions and gestures that create a unified concept or patterns which are greater then the sum of its parts. Tina Hage’s photography explores the relationship between the collective and the individual; specifically with how this is represented in the mass media. Her work deploys contemporary photojournalistic and topical imagery from on-line and off-line news sources, and is reflected upon by using herself to re-enact the found scenes. Indeed, many of the poses in these works feel as though they are mid-action – that they are in the act of forming a gesture rather than existing as a completed visual form. Although the patterns and physical language of the individual figures that form the collective act appear strangely natural and familiar, there is an underlying sense of isolation and tension.
