K R Pomeroy began painting in black in 2004 as a reaction to his previously highly coloured “action paintings”. From the start the canvas surface was deformed giving interesting tonal qualities to the work. As the work progressed Fontana-like piercing of the canvas was introduced along with the deformation. The work culminated in a 6×1.5 metre multi-panel work which was his MA dissertation piece. This work can currently be seen in the foyer of UEA London, Middlesex St.Before moving on to more “destructive” deforming of the canvas Pomeroy painted four “Elegies for Rothko” which will represent the end of the phase of work being shown.
