The work in this exhibition is inspired by the colours, textures and transformations of the woods after the Swinley Forest fires of May 2011. Its is not about the fire in the woods or its recovery, but about layers of time, of memory. It’s about layers of geology, of history, of how nature layers the evidence of events. Like a palimpsest the land reveals the traces of its previous form, the lines of its history, our history. It is re-written by the erosions and deposits of time. The burnt woods will become a layer, a seam, a thin black line in the geological record.
