An exhibition in which artists Beverly Ayling-Smith, Carol Quarini and Bob White have developed work investigating cloth as the holder of the memory of our time and the connector with the memories of other times and other places. All three visited Salts Mill several times over the past year and have created work as a response to the history of the place: the memory of cloth and the making of cloth that has seeped into the fabric of the building. They are all using cloth, our familiarity with cloth and our readiness to associate cloth with the stories that accompany our lives. Beverly Ayling-Smith constructs, deconstructs and embeds cloth as a metaphor for the ‘journey’ of mourning; Carol Quarini uses the familiar net curtain in such a way as to create a sense of unfamiliarity and an implicit, uneasy narrative; Bob White is painting allusions to cloth itself, forming a memory of the memory of cloth.
