In an age of super connectivity Liz Whiteman Smith has codified sets and sub-sets of internet users. Individuals who tweet and share with the web community; the intimacy of which highlights their isolation. The paintings have a cool detachment, redolent of the Bechers’ water towers, their complex mass standing out from the empty space around them. The grids though codified do not need to be view as a whole. The serial repetition serves to highlight their singularity and draws you to an individual. Whiteman Smith is a figurative painter whose starting point is strangers, living in remote areas. Her graphic clarity emphasises the disjointed nature of the photo-face that we send out into the world, trusting it to communicate our message.WLTM is her first solo exhibition, and brings together her explorations of lonely individuals like faces in a book of stamps their repetition increases their power.PV 13.9.12 6-8pm
