The sea is absorbing half the carbon dioxide produced by humans over the past 200 years, resulting in increased acidity which attacks and kills shellfish, plankton, and coral at the base of the marine food chain. Coral reefs are also being destroyed by destructive fishing practices and tourism. The dead plants used in Dorothea’s work relate to the shapes and textures of corals. White, the dominant colour provided a ghostly sense of loss and is also the colour of the bleached coral skeletons. This ceramic installation and exhibition explores the issue of climate change and what can clearly be seen to be happening to coral and marine life.
