Intriguing sculpture by Carolyn Corfield features in this event, hosted for the first time by Bowes Museum, a magnificent French chateau built in Teesdale by John and Josephine Bowes, famed for their important collection of art. Referencing H.G,.Wells, who claimed “we all have our time machines … memories take us back and dreams take us forward”, Carolyn’s ‘Memory Keeper’ comprises a hand painted tattooed head placed on a bronze glazed receptacle, a post box for memories and dream wishes. Her second ceramic piece ‘Hestia’ with its Grecian profile and flaming hair is presented on a turned wood base. Reminiscent of a giant chess piece, it alludes to the part we all play in life’s complex social matrix. The Durham Open, now in its fourth year, has grown to become an event with international participation.
