Leanne Broadbent an East Yorkshire based artist is one of the 123 artists who have been selected to participate in the highly prestigious North Yorkshire Open Studios event, taking place over two weekends in June (Saturday 8th/ Sunday 9th June & Saturday 15th/ Sunday 16th June). Leanne’s work begins with a playful desire to juxtapose contradictory images of nonsensical themes, which are often inspired by the fantasy literature of Lewis Carroll and fairy tales by the Brothers Grimm. Feelings of escapism through reading alongside concerns and aspects of social contemporary culture accumulate into contradictory images that oscillate between the realm of reality and the imagination. The combined use of mid-20th Century inspired fabrics, child-like stencils and drawing aim to create a narrative of tension conveying the transitory journey from memories of childhood into an adult’s perspective with a sinister edge.
