‘Mission’ is fourth in a two-year series of solo exhibitions showcasing 24 painters. The solo series contemporary british painting was initiated by curator Robert Priseman to explore the variety and strength of painting in Britain today.
‘Mission’ explores the role of Christian missionaries in India and Bangladesh. Partly autobiographical, the works feature priest and congregation, and the religious iconography of cross, cassock, and altar. The exhibition consists of ten new paintings shown in the St Marylebone Crypt, displayed alongside the existing religious icons in the space. The church was recently the venue for the Serpentine’s collaborative exhibition ‘Re:assembly’.
Robert Priseman says “Matthew Krishanu is one of the most exciting painters practising in Britain today. His work displays a profound level of sensitivity, portraying people immersed deep in their own worlds. Beautifully balancing colour, composition and subject, Krishanu is a painter to admire.”
Matthew Krishanu was born in Bradford in 1980, and is based in London. He completed an MA in Fine Art at Central Saint Martins in 2009.
