Alex Dewart questions the role of representation in painting, taking inspiration from Christian icon painting, replacing religious figures with a broader set of contemporary ‘icons’ as well as more general historical figures. Her landscape work uses structures such as bridges which have more symbolic values attached to them. Ursula Leach makes paintings, prints and drawings in response to the chalk landscape of Cranborne Chase. The work is, to some extent, about current agricultural practices, but firstly is about the formal issues of image making. Colour is important as an expression of mood and atmosphere and as an indicator of new and different crops. As climate change takes effect there are dramatic and beautiful changes of colour in the fields.
