Apocalypse now?
The Arboreal exhibition features 4 up and coming artists exploring man's interaction with the world and with fellow humans and tackles all sort of topical issues such as consumerism, social status and the ever tricky world of relationships.
The quirk is while it is all about us flawed, materialistic humans, any actual representation of the human form is mostly absent from the works on show. This leaves space for more organic creations which by contrast only serve to bring our attention to the unnaturalness of our man-made world.
The highlight of the show is artist Debbie Lawson who fills beautifully carved wooden panels with roaming or sexually- rampant wolves that turns the domestic environment into a savage land of psychodrama.
Tobi Deeson flowers constructions rather than bringing us comforting thoughts of nature in bloom are resolutely unnatural. Made of cheap bed linen, they confront us with visions of relationships gone stale, everyday boredom and regret.
The show also features paintings by Lee Maelzer and Jo Wilmot who both force us to look at representations of the often claustrophobic and chaotic environment we live in.
Is it me or has it suddenly turned very chilly? It's not all doom and gloom though, the show raises fundamental questions about the world we have created for ourselves but also leaves you feeling like it might not be too late to do something about it.
