Derelict walls, interfered with signs, fragments of faded posters; all are varnished with the film of daily life, bearing witness to the effects of weather and the passage of time. These insignificant details found throughout the built environment form part of an urban language that may be used to decipher the interests, habits, and routines of contemporary life. Cannon’s art stems from photographic observations of these incidental characteristics, she is interested in the overlooked and the irrelevant, repeated patterns and structural shapes, and the history accumulated in aged and forgotten areas on the brink of change. Seeking out this information she chronicles the social attitudes, political concerns, and cultural trends of a place, both past and present. Cannon, an American born mixed-media fine artist based in Berkshire, gained her MA in Fine Art Print from Camberwell College, University of the Arts London (2005). She exhibits on a regular basis and has been selected for many national and international exhibitions, festivals and curated projects including the Liverpool Biennial Independents, BBC Big Screens program, and the International Print Triennial, Poland. Her work is included in several publications including ‘Critical Mass – Printmaking Beyond the Edge’ by Richard Noyce, and the upcoming book by Jac Scott ‘The Language of Mixed-Media Sculpture’ to be published by Crowood Press in 2014.
