Quirky ceramic sculpture by Carolyn Corfield on display in Durham Cathedral could have leapt from the gloriously illustrated borders found in medieval manuscripts. Steampunk angels with gold leaf embellished porcelain wings catch the eye, while a serpent can be spotted, seductively whispering in Eve’s ear as Adam sleeps by her side, oblivious. Another figurative piece, the elegantly arched and subtly glazed ‘Remembered Bride’, acknowledges those making their contractual vows of union with a soulmate or committing themselves in marriage to the Church. A more contemporary piece obliquely symbolizes the concept of Peace. Inspired by a Dove’s nest, discovered in the artist’s garden, it contains an eminently tactile, polished porcelain replica of the egg. A visit will not disappoint, as yet further intriguing sculptures by Carolyn incorporate a narrative puzzle. A total of 27 Interface Artists will be participating in this event within the Galilee Chapel.
