Solo Art Exhibition by Anya Charikov-Mickleburgh

“The Purple Gate” draws on the idea of national cultural identity and was inspired by Panov’s abandoned estate in Zubovka, a Russian village in the Volga region.

The concept of the exhibition is how we can be caught between reality and imagination, the impact this has on our sense of identiy and reality, and the way this changed perception can be expressed through art – both narrative and image-making.

Through the prism of the stories and rumours surrounding this estate, the artist not only weaves a multi-character persona with her tableau in the village, but also builds a harmony between the past and the present by referencing the richness of colours in her artworks.

Anya’s painting echo the expressiveness of the vivid blue window lintels, the rich green foliage and the enticing purple gate.”The Purple Gate” is a provocateur of the collective imagination. The themes of place, history and the presence of the past will be familiar to everyone, regardless of their national or cultural background.
