Edinburgh’s Collective gallery has announced the participants for their 2013 New Work Scotland Programme (NWSP). They are: Conor Kelly, Calvin Laing, Rachel Maclean, Shona Macnaughton and Tom Varley.
NWSP is a programme of exhibitions and discourse initiated by Collective that identifies and supports, through an annual open application, new practitioners working in the visual arts in Scotland. In recent years, eligibility has been widened to engage final-year students from Scottish art courses and Scottish-based artists who are within six years of graduation.
All five selected practitioners will receive a solo show as part of Collective’s 2013 gallery programme. Last year’s programme, taking on the theme ‘Mining the Horizon’, sought to build on how previous selected artists such as Amelia Bywater and Oliver Braid integrated cross-pollination into research and development.
For 2013 artists will be working around the theme of ‘The Plural Association’. They will produce commissions, take part in residencies at Studio Voltaire in London and participate in structured critical discourse and mentorship.
This year’s selection also includes graduates who sought programming experience in the form of a six-month internship. Frances Stacey is Curatorial Development Intern, while James Bell was selected as Critical Discourse Intern.
The programme begins with a retreat to Hospitalfield House in Arbroath this summer, where interns, artists and invited guests from the panel of selectors will workshop ideas for the future programme at Collective.
