Artes Mundi has announced a shortlist of ten artists for the sixth edition of the international biennial prize – its longest shortlist since it was founded in 2002. The 2012 edition, which was won by Mexican artist Teresa Margolles, had a shortlist of seven.
The shortlisted artists are: Carlos Bunga (Portugal), Omer Fast (Israel), Theaster Gates (USA), Sanja Iveković (Croatia), Ragnar Kjartansson (Iceland), Sharon Lockhart (USA), Renata Lucas (Brazil), Renzo Martens (The Netherlands), Karen Mirza and Brad Butler (UK).
Artes Mundi 6 selectors Adam Budak and Sabine Schaschl reviewed 800 nominations from 70 countries. The shortlisted artists work in a wide range of media and employ a variety of actions and strategies to explore and comment on the human condition and lived experience. Adam said: “[the shortlisted artists] are engaged in a transformation of contemporary society by considering the urgent issues the world is concerned with.”
Karen MacKinnon, director and curator of Artes Mundi, said: “I am delighted that more artists will be participating in Artes Mundi 6 next year. Looking at the amazing array of artistic practices, we can predict an exhibition that will be challenging, playful and moving. Artes Mundi 6 will ask questions about the politics of institutional and urban space, media representation and manipulation, music, beauty, and above all the meaning of humanity in contemporary society.”
The Artes Mundi 6 exhibition will take place from 25 October 2014 to February 2015 at Wales’ National Museum of Art in Cardiff. The exhibition will also extend to other sites in Cardiff city centre and across Wales. In addition to the main exhibition, there will be other exhibitions and events including a major exhibition by Adam Broomberg & Oliver Chanarin at Mostyn in Llandudno during 2014.
