London Art Fair
The 26th edition of the London Art Fair, the UK’s largest fair for Modern British and contemporary art. This year’s fair includes a partnership with The Hepworth Wakefield, which will present an exhibition of British Modernism, and a new series of international ‘Dialogues’, curated by Adam Carr of MOSTYN, that mark the 10th year of the Art Projects section. Other highlights include Photo50, the fair’s annual showcase of contemporary photography, curated by Charlie Fellowes and Jeremy Epstein, Directors of Edel Assanti.

Beyond Blue Symposium
Symposium bringing together leading academic researchers, industry experts and artists to discuss underglaze tissue ceramic printing. Let’s Argue for the Arts: creating a manifesto for the arts within learning
Free event hosted by Lewisham Education Arts Network (LEAN) looking at different opinions and implications regarding the new curriculum and its impact on the arts. The event will include an exploration of current issues relevant to arts education sector, plus networking opportunities to chat with other practitioners. Annual cross-arts exploration of the culture and meanings of landscape returns for its fourth edition with a wide-ranging investigation into what it means to hold your ground and occupy a place, a theme that takes on a special resonance with the centenary of the First World War. The programme includes a new series of commissions, ‘Stay Where You Are’, produced in collaboration with Film and Video Umbrella and funded by the Jerwood Charitable Foundation, with contributions by artist Jem Finer, poet Lavinia Greenlaw, essayist Jay Griffiths and film-maker Ben Rivers.

Southwark Arts Conference: The Art of Making Money
Creative professionals share their successful experiences on how to establish a career in the creative industries. Ask the Audience – The Arts Funding Debate
Question Time-style panel debate Chaired by Cluny MacPherson, Chief Officer of Culture and Sport at Leeds City Council. Speakers include Dr Kara McKechnie, making the case for balanced arts funding which includes large ‘flagship’ arts organisations; a-n’s Director Susan Jones, speaking for an increased emphasis on funding for solo artists and freelancers; Jamie Sefton, in support of investment in arts that can be commercialised; and Adrian Sinclair, making the case for increased funding of community arts. SUPERMARKET 2014 – Stockholm Independent Art Fair

RSA New Contemporaries 2014
A curated annual exhibition with its focus on emerging artists and architects in Scotland. Now in its sixth year, the show has evolved out of the long standing RSA Annual Student Exhibition which was first held in 1976. This year’s exhibition includes 62 graduates selected from the 2013 degree shows, and will see the presentation of the first ever Fleming-Wyfold Bursary, sponsored by the Fleming-Wyfold Foundation. The recipient will receive a bursary of £10,000 plus an additional £4,000 towards project production costs, along with mentoring from curator Susanna Beaumont. Additionally, the Foundation is supporting a newly developed exhibition of works by artists selected from RSA New Contemporaries, to be held at the Fleming Collection in London.

No Boundaries
This open symposium on the role of culture in 21st century society aims to provide a fresh model for generating discussion among leaders and innovators in arts and culture, and to help find positive approaches to influence change and support the sector’s growth. Delegates can choose to attend No Boundaries at either of two locations, Bristol or York, with each venue providing unique experiences and a live link to broadcast talks between both spaces.

Art14 London
The second edition of ‘the city’s global art fair’ will feature over 170 galleries, with European modern and contemporary galleries exhibiting alongside leading spaces from Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Middle East. Two curated sections complement the main fair: London First is advised by Belgian-based Mai Abu ElDahab and will include 16 young galleries who have not exhibited at an art fair in London before; Emerge is advised by Lisa Le Feuvre of the Henry Moore Institute, Leeds, and includes galleries isuch as London-based space Edel Assanti, showcasing the work of Gordon Cheung, and El Museo from Bogota, which will show work by the Brazilian artist Mauro Piva.

AV Festival 14: EXTRACTION
The north east England-based biennial of contemporary art, film and music takes the idea of extraction as the curated theme of its 2014 edition, to ‘reflect the subterranean map of the region’. Many of the commissioned works will make a direct reference to the region’s geological features and resources and to contemporary concerns about their exploitation. The festival programme includes 11 exhibitions, 36 film screenings, 10 concerts and 11 new commissions by international and nationally-renowned artists. The festival takes place at venues across Newcastle upon Tyne, Gateshead, Sunderland, Middlesbrough and beyond.

Loitering with Intent: A Feast of Research

2014 Whitney Biennial
The 77th Whitney Biennial will take on a new form as three curators from outside the museum – Stuart Comer (Chief Curator of Media and Performance Art at MoMA), Anthony Elms (Associate Curator at the Institute of Contemporary Art, Philadelphia), and Michelle Grabner (artist and Professor in the Painting and Drawing Department at the School of the Art Institute, Chicago) – each oversee one floor, representing a range of geographic vantages and curatorial methodologies. This will be the last biennial to take place in the Whitney Museum of American Art’s building at 945 Madison Avenue at 75th Street before the museum moves downtown to a new building in the spring of 2015.

The international festival of digital culture and ideas returns for its 19th year with the theme ‘tools for unknown futures’, exploring possibilities for collaborating using new tools, devices and systems ‘to transform many spheres of life, from the arts to democracy’. Glasgow Open House Art Festival
Programme of visual arts, performance and music that includes the work of over 80 artists scattered across 32 venues in every corner of Glasgow. This artist-led project aims to generate discussion around the way art is exhibited and consumed both in and out of doors.

Art Across The City
The LOCWS International Public Art Programme across the City of Swansea continues into 2014. Commissioned artists will include Jon Burgerman, Jeremy Deller, Craig Fisher, Thomas Goddard, Nick Jordan, Jeremy Millar, Lisa Scantlebury, Ross Sinclair, Bob & Roberta Smith and Ultimate Holding Company. International Print Biennale 2014
Coordinated by printmaking studio and gallery Northern Print, the International Print Biennale celebrates the role of print in contemporary artists’ practice. Glasgow 2014 Cultural Programme
Visual arts will feature widely in the Cultural Programme for the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games. In the East End of the city, David Dale Gallery will work with artists across the six Commonwealth territories to present a series of exhibitions under the title International Artist Initiated, presented both at the gallery and across other venues. Commissioned works will include a special outdoor screening of a new film by the artist Phil Collins and a new public artwork as part of a collaboration between artist Ruth Ewan, Create London and architects Assemble, while at Tramway, a ‘performers’ village’ designed by visual artist Richard Layzell will host a new multi-media performance piece by choreographer Janice Parker.

Liverpool Biennial 2014
New summer opening slot for the the eighth edition of the Liverpool Biennial. This year’s lead exhibition, which is curated by Mai Abu ElDahab and Anthony Huberman, will unfold across the city at venues including the Bluecoat, FACT and Tate Liverpool, while commissioned works will interact with the urban landscape. The Art Party! How do you tell one man he has got it wrong?
Part documentary, part road movie and part political fantasy that captures the spirit of the 2013 conference of the same name and champions the importance of art and its place in education and politics. This film by Bob and Roberta Smith and Tim Newton will be a kaleidoscopic mix of performance, artist interviews and imagined scenes, and will be released at a series of simultaneous art parties across the UK on GCSE results day 2014. Folkestone Triennial
Organised by independent arts charity The Creative Foundation, this third edition of the Triennial, which invites artists to create works that reflect issues affecting both the town and the wider world, will be curated by former Liverpool Biennial Director Lewis Biggs, under the title ‘Lookout’. Speaking about his vision for the 2014 programme upon on his appointment to the role, Biggs commented: “Folkestone can be a lens through which we look out at the world and question what’s happening now and what’s coming next.”

Alt_Cph 14 ‘Assemble’
Copenhagen’s alternative art fair and a meeting place for experimental artist-run spaces and initiatives. Under this year’s theme ‘Assemble’, and taking place as part of Copenhagen Art Week, artists will present bio-art labs, hacker spaces and new media projects at the FABRIKKEN (Factory of Art and Design), a production and resource centre that is home to professional artists and designers working in 53 studio spaces. Making the City Playable Conference
The Making the City Playable Conference brings together thinkers, makers, planners and civil disobedients to look at cities as playable places, asking what it might mean for citizens, urban planners, tech giants, small companies, artists and designers in imagining and making the cities of the future. Berwick Film & Media Arts Festival
The tenth edition of this international celebration of the art of film will once again transform the border town of Berwick-upon-Tweed into one big cinema screen through film premieres, site-specific installations and live events. For 2014, the festival will take Berwick’s position at the heart of what was once known as the ‘debatable lands’ as its starting point, having identity neither English nor Scottish but all of its own, and explore border identities all over the world.

Frieze London
Outing number 12 for this annual contemporary art fair housed in a bespoke structure in Regent’s Park, London. Alongside a seemingly infinite array of international commercial art galleries, visitors will be able to experience the Frieze Projects programme of artist commissions, and Frieze Talks, a programme of debates, panel discussions and keynote lectures. The Other Art Fair
The ‘artist-led’ fair that enables artists to showcase their work to gallerists, curators, critics and collectors returns for its seventh edition during ‘Frieze week’. Artes Mundi 6 exhibition
The Cardiff-based international art prize returns with its biggest shortlist yet. Ten artists are in the running for the biennial prize, which in 2012 was won by Mexican artist Teresa Margolles. The 2014 engage International Conference takes place in Leeds and will explore the broad and inspiring theme of innovation in the context of education and learning in galleries, museums and the visual arts. The programme will consider gallery education, examining where practice has been innovative in the past, in the present, and how it can continue to innovate in the future. There will be a focus on the potential of digital technologies to encourage new ways of engaging with art and ideas, and discussion about the importance of innovation, provocation and disruption in learning and education across different art forms.
10-12 November 2014, Northern Ballet, Leeds, with breakout sessions at cultural venues across the city including Leeds Museums and Galleries and The Tetley.
