Art Catlin has announced the finalists for its annual award profiling the ‘most promising art school graduates’ one year on from their degree exhibitions. The Catlin Art Prize exhibition of works by the seven finalists will open at Londonewcastle Project Space in London on 2 May, with the overall winner of the £5,000 prize announced at a private ceremony on 14 May.

The 2014 finalists are: Mr & Mrs Philip Cath (Goldsmiths), Sarah Fortais (Central Saint Martins), Virgile Ittah (Royal College of Art), Lara Morrell (Central Saint Martins), Neil Raitt (Royal College of Art), Dennis J Reinmüller (Edinburgh College of Art), and Jakob Rowlinson (The Ruskin School of Drawing and Fine Art).

Now in its eight year, The Catlin Art Prize provides an opportunity for artists to demonstrate progress made during their first year after art school by exhibiting a new body of work. The finalists are selected from The Catlin Guide, an introduction to 40 new graduate artists in the UK, as recommended by a survey of curators, art writers, collectors, gallerists and tutors. The Prize also provides mentoring and production assistance to encourage the finalists to produce ambitious new projects.

This year’s judging panel includes Turner Prize winner Mark Wallinger. Alongside the £5,000 first prize, the winner of the Visitor Vote prize will be awarded £2,000.

Justin Hammond, Art Catlin curator, said: “I’m inspired by the sense of conviction shared by this year’s shortlist. While there’s talk of a diminishing pool of talent in our art schools, this particular group have new and interesting things to say. They’re free of commercial constraints and deserving of this platform.”
