Alan Goulbourne, Richard Gravelle, Shaun James, Steven George, Jones, Marega Palser & Jo Young, Steve Reinke, Sara Rees, James Richards. Curated by Bob Gelsthorpe
Recognising the wealth of South Wales’ creative practitioners, putting the value of their network into light. With each selected artist taking hold of the curatorial baton and selecting another artist to commission, the visual conversations revel in those conversations in the pub, the cups of coffee together and the laughter.
First found in English in a letter of Issac Newton’s: “If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of giants”. Taking this statement as a starting point, the artists selected for the exhibition are diverse in their practices and geographies but all have a relationship with the city. It is through this relationship to the city, and the acknowledgement of the community of creative practitioners as a valuable aspect of artist practice that each artist has taken hold of the curatorial baton and selected another artist to exhibit or work with.
Observing and remembering acts of profound generosity and faith within creative circles, A Giant, Who’s Shoulders I Stand On is part of ongoing curatorial research into the role of artist-led activity and the peer groups as lifeblood. Opening as a warm-up for the launch of The Kim Fielding Award.
