Among Remote Lost Objects
TABATHA ANDREWS – with score by John Matthias sung by Victoria Oruwari
9th – 12th July 2015
PRIVATE VIEW Thursday 9th July 6-8 pm
7.15pm – Tabatha Andrew in conversation with Victoria Oruwari, John Matthias and Professor Andrew Pickering.
Exhibition runs 10th and 11th July 12-5 pm. The chamber will also be open 12th July 12-5 pm (no performances).
Among Remote Lost Objects is an acoustic installation that unsettles the relationships between our senses. A sound-deadening ‘room within a room’ occupies KARST, creating the feeling of being within and underneath. The inner surface of this chamber is made from recycled wool textiles, resonant with memory and primal association. The chamber oscillates between total darkness and light, unsettling and disorientating the viewer, yet surrounding them with warmth. Outside, Karst is flooded with echoing sound, light and air.
The blind opera singer Victoria Oruwari will perform a score written by composer John Matthias in response to this work. Over the past months Andrews, Matthias and Oruwari have collaborated on a vocal score first generated in the anechoic chamber at UCL, exploring loss, resonance and non-resonance through voice and violin. Matthias has developed this piece through a ‘neurogranular sampler’, a digital processing programme that mimics the action of neurons in the brain to produce music rich in memory and texture.
Oruwari will perform with the work on the opening night and every afternoon on the half hour between 12.30 and 4.30 pm with the exception of the 12th July, when only the chamber will be open. The performance lasts approximately three minutes. At other times you are free to experience the chamber for as long as you wish, numbers permitting.
Among Remote Lost Objects was first built at ROOMartspace in London during May this year, provoking some great responses:
‘Everything has disappeared, all reality has gone’
‘It was the first time in years I had a total absence of light’
‘I feel like I’m literally wrapped up in something’
‘Outside my ears are resonating – in here its my body’
‘When the light comes on it feels like the sunrise’
‘Your imagination could run riot here!’
‘Its like shadowy sound’
Lighting and sound tech by David Strang
Those suffering from claustrophobia or tinnitus may find this installation uncomfortable but please feel free to enjoy the performance and music.
