A rare opportunity for the uninitiated to experience a blacksmith’s workshop first hand. Charis and her assistant went about their daily routine, pummeling steel with substantial hammers, while answering questions from the people gathered at the safety barrier. I found the talk to be insightful and informative, having attended many open studio events hosted by an array of artists, this was by far the most on-topic q&a session presented to me thus far.
Charis is a powerful figure, expertly forging her wares with competence. She is a true master of her discipline, she handled some quite obscure technical questions, without hiding behind a complex web of jargon, as is the standard retort of many art professionals in my experience. My only criticism would have to be that the venue was quite hard to find, I had to ask two separate people for directions; my solution would have to be…an A-frame.
If you’re in the area during the next open studio event, I would definitely recommend visiting.
