This collaboration was actually conceived out of a conversation in a pub many moons ago. The idea of us working together was so strong that we followed through. I am very happy to be the recipient of this bursary, which will enable us to push this collaboration forward by supporting us financially. I am looking forward to begin.
The research period of this collaboration will span from August to November and will be based around 4 key meetings, which will involve discussions, going to exhibitions and the Kinetica Art Fair, creating, playing and experimenting with objects in Mike’s studio. Time outside of these meetings will be individual research, but we will continue to communicate online. The first meeting kicks off on 10th August at the V&A, where we will talk about our individual practice and ideas on this collaboration and visit the Disobedient Objects exhibition.
A bit about the exhibition: “…this exhibition will be the first to examine the powerful role of objects in movements for social change. It will demonstrate how political activism drives a wealth of design ingenuity and collective creativity that defy standard definitions of art and design.”
I think we could kick start the collaboration by looking at objects that are under the art and design banner, but also objects that are influenced by activism. The word activism, which is from active + ism, and active derives from Latin agere meaning to do or to act. Therefore this makes me think of objects influenced by action/movements such as in performance.
I am interested to understand more of Mike’s practice and how embedded technology could be integrated into my practice, which has been so far mostly been a drawing medium on a surface (usually ink on paper). What would also be interesting is how it could be integrated into performance drawings.
I will report back after the 10th. Until then… I remain curious and excited.
