The Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, has announced that registration for the John Moores Painting Prize 2016 is now open, with UK-based artists working with the medium of paint invited to submit their work.
The biennial prize, established in 1957, has included David Hockney (1967), Mary Martin (1969), Peter Doig (1993) and Keith Coventry (2010) among its winners. Most recently, Rose Wylie was awarded the £25,000 first prize in 2014 for her work PV Windows and Floorboards (pictured above).
As in previous years, artists can submit one new or recent work which should be wholly or partly executed in any painted medium. Works will be judged anonymously by a panel of judges (to be announced soon) through a two-stage process. Works will initially be viewed as digital images, followed by the viewing of a smaller number of actual works in stage two.
The longlist of works selected for exhibition will go on show at Walker Art Gallery from 9 July 2016 as part of Liverpool Biennial, and the judges will also announce a final shortlist of five paintings from which the £25,000 first prize winning work will be chosen.
The four remaining shortlisted artists will each receive £2500, while a Visitors’ Choice Award of £2016 will be selected by visitors to the exhibition.
Inspiring and eclectic
Announcing the opening of the registration process, Sandra Penketh, director of art galleries at National Museums Liverpool, said: “In many ways, the John Moores Painting Prize has come to represent what is interesting, important and above all exciting about contemporary painting in Britain today. It has also provided a springboard to launch the careers of some of the UK’s most talented artists.
“We received more than 2500 entries for the 2014 Prize, which the judging panel painstakingly narrowed down to a shortlist of works of the very highest calibre. We look forward to receiving an equally inspiring and eclectic selection of entries this year.”
