This month Blue Monkey Network are taking part in a big evening of events at Towner with all three of Towner’s galleries packed with a diverse range of art by artists and designers from the Bloomsbury Group and Ravilious to the best of Sussex artists working today.
The evening kicks off early with a free Walk and Talk around the East Sussex Open with Towner’s Head of Contemporary Programmes, Sanna Moore. The exhibition, selected by a panel including Sanna, Matthew Cornford, Professor of Fine Art, University of Brighton, and international Hastings-based artist Becky Beasley, highlights the variety of artists and makers working throughout the East Sussex region. Sanna’s talk will offer an insight into the process of selecting and curating an open submission exhibition. www.townereastbourne.org.uk/event/east-sussex-open-2014-curators-talk/
Blue Monkey Network hosts the middle slot of the evening with a short tour which offers an artists’ view of selected works in the Designing The Everyday and Peggy Angus exhibitions. In the weeks before the event some of our most long-standing Network members are busily selecting pieces from the exhibitions and responding to them in a variety of ways. They will present their responses during the evening, ranging from readings or performance to presentations of new work inspired by their chosen pieces. Each artist will spend a few minutes telling us about their choice of work and how their responses developed. The only limitation placed upon the artists is that they must be able to present their work in the gallery next or near to the piece they have been inspired by. Artists taking part so far include include Clare Whistler, Judith Alder, Christine Binnie, Kate Graham, Anne Barrell and Sheila Hay www.townereastbourne.org.uk/event/blue-monkey-towner-tour/
To top off the evening, Towner hosts The Art Party event as part of a UK-wide network of galleries, artists’ studios and independent cinemas showing a simultaneous first screening of Art Party, a new collaborative film by Tim Newton and Bob and Roberta Smith. Part documentary, road movie and political fantasy, this artist film captures the spirit of the 2013 Scarborough artists’ conference, championing the importance of art and its place in education and modern politics. http://www.townereastbourne.org.uk/event/art-party/
Make a night of it – come early for the free East Sussex Open Curator’s talk at 5pm, have an artist-led tour around the exhibitions with Blue Monkey Network at 6pm and then extend the arty celebrations post-screening with music and bar ’til 11pm. All for £10 or less.
