1’ is an exhibition of work created by first year students on the MFA at Wimbledon College of Art. The artists involved could explore any theme or idea with only one condition: the work produced was limited to 1’ in size. This could be 1’ square, or 1’x1’x1’ depending on the process of working. The results of this experiment are what you see exhibited here.
Setting a size limit has become a restriction for some of these artists, but an element of freedom for others. This format gives the artists the space to reconsider their usual method of working by encasing it within in a fixed dimensional system.
It is this system which allows for quicker comparisons to be read between the works and which therefore reveals an interesting paradox. The size limit leads to an emphasis on the uniqueness of each piece, while also underlining the connections between the works. Connections that come with the territory of studying on the same course and co-inhabiting the same studio space.
