Please come to the gallery and hear artist Sarah Lees in conversation with gallery manager and curator, Lynne Crompton.
Lees will chat about her current solo show, her interests and inspiration in relation to her own practice, her role as a graphic designer, the return to a Fine Art education and her own teaching approach as a newly-fledged educator.
Sarah Lees states, “Early studies were preoccupied with technique as I worked with differing concentrations of paint to establish a language that clarified what I wanted to say about the subject of structure and form.
Later paintings followed an alternative thread in their disregard of realism, taking instead motifs and forms in favour of a freer, more fluid, intuitive style of painting that broke down structure, simplifying and abstracting until the original elements had been abandoned in favour of a new, idiomatic language. These studies were augmented by scaled-up work that further advanced my understanding of what constitutes form and the dissolving of form. The surfaces were primed but it was also important that the integrity of the plywood was evident when sanded back or distressed: part of an appreciation of combinations and their possibilities: ply has an inbuilt aesthetic integrity of the horizontal or vertical working axis within which lies yet more potential; more chance to interact, and more possibility of random happenings. It is also a live material like oil paint. I think with abstract painting it matters very much what surface you use.
All of the main works are oil on panel, and all of them pay particular attention to surface, mark making and a kind of fresh resonance, a pleasurable response to the medium of paint. The sketchbooks and developmental work try to maintain the fresh impulsiveness of the gesture.”
Join in the conversation in an informal, intimate atmosphere. Light refreshments available. Free event! All welcome…
