Motherland, Fatherland, Mima, Middlesbrough
Spanish artist Núria Güell‘s work explores questions around national identity and migration. Her show at Mima documents her collaborative practice, including the work Humanitarian Aid which focuses on Güell offering herself in marriage to any man wanting to emigrate from Cuba to Spain. The deal eventually took place, ending in divorce after he obtained Spanish citizenship.

Bridge Over Troubled Water, CCA, Derry
Part of an ongoing project between the performance collective MSL (Antti Jussila and Jari Kallio) and artist Jaakko Pallasvuo. Featuring a sculptural installation that includes film, painting, costumes, and props, it re-imagines the 1960s music group Simon & Garfunkel as a time-travelling duo.

Surrealist Encounters: Collecting the Marvellous, Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, Edinburgh
This bumper show brings together a number of Surrealist works from four collections: Edward James, Roland Penrose, Gabrielle Keiller and Ulla and Heiner Pietzsch. Some of the well-known works on display include Salvador Dali’s Mae West Lips Sofa and Lobster telephone, plus René Magritte’s famous 1937 portrait, La reproduction interdite (Not to be reproduced).

Boomoon, Flowers Gallery, London
This solo exhibition by South Korean photographer Boomoon features a new series of photographs produced at Skogar Falls, Iceland. The black and white works have an ethereal quality, with each taken from the same spot but capturing the changing nature of the environment.

Sue Rossiter, White Moose, Barnstaple
A different sort of exhibition altogether, this show by Sue Rossiter explores the skills of North Devon’s historic glovers. Rossiter’s ceramics combine stitch-like mark-making, leather-like surface qualities and colours developed from local earth pigments in a fitting tribute to what is a generations old craft.
