This year, 44AD looks forward to collaborating with artist Doug Clark and curator Laura Keenan for eighthwonder 2016.
The theme for this year’s exhibition is Where is your humanity? Alongside the spectacular neon lit installation ‘The Humanity Monument’ by Doug Clark, on display will be a variety of paint, print, photography and 3D artworks by different artists. So, get the 8th of the 8th into your diaries and join us for 44AD’s Open Summer Show Party!
In this exhibition we want to show what best represents humanity. How do we show we are human beings with the ability to think, feel, communicate, express, live?
What makes us human beings? What is our real value to the world? Who are we to the other? What makes us realise and appreciate our own humanity?
This exhibition does not aim to answer the question: ‘Where is your humanity?’, since for each of us the answer is different. But we want to pose the question with visitors about themselves.

The keynote artwork of the exhibition is ‘The Humanity Monument’ by the artist Doug Clark.
About his artwork, Doug says “The word ‘Humanity’ is just an ordinary word but it is an important word. It derives from the Latin ‘humanitas’ or ‘human nature’ as in the manner of mercy and kindness. Of course it also means Mankind, so it is a word about us. The word ‘Monument’ also comes from Latin: ‘monere’, meaning to remind, to warn or in some translations, to instruct. It is in essence, about communication.”
“The question is not meant to be accusatorial; it has after all, a question mark and not an exclamation mark. It is suggestion that we should look at ourselves, look at our attitudes. Yet to some, it may well be accusatorial in which case, there may be an even greater imperative to look at ones self. A little introspection will do no harm.”
The curator of this exhibition is Laura Keenan, a MA Curatorial Practice student at Bath Spa University. As a Brazilian museologist she aims to bring to the exhibition a different point of view of humanity in other parts of the world.
