Every two years the Colour Group (Great Britain) invites a distinguished artist or art historian to give The Turner Lecture, named in honour of Britain’s greatest colourist. A sterling silver medal is awarded to mark the occasion, and the recipient presents a keynote lecture related to his or her work. The Committee of the Colour Group (Great Britain) is pleased to announce that the 2017 Turner Medal will be awarded to Michael Craig-Martin RA.

when Michael Craig-Martin will deliver the keynote Turner Medal Lecture entitled Colour in Practice.
Michael Craig-Martin was nominated by Philip O’Reilly and Shirine Osseiran for his long standing and successful artistic career and, in more recent times, his use of pure colour in his paintings, prints and environmental installations that include painting, sculpture and public art, light installations, moving image and video art and architectural commissions.
Craig-Martin was born in 1941 in Dublin, Ireland. He attended Fordham University, New York, from 1959 to 1961. He received his BA in 1963 and his MFA in 1966 from Yale University, Connecticut. In the mid-1960s he returned to Europe, becoming one of the key figures in the first generation of British conceptual artists. In the 1990s, Craig-Martin made a decisive shift towards painting and developed his hallmark style of precise, bold outlines demarcating flat planes of intensely vibrant colours. Painting later became environmental installation art in scale and execution and more recently he has returned to individual canvases that retain his distinctive drawing and colourful representations. Craig-Martin’s style is based on sound drawing practice and is a defining aspect of his work. Whilst the content remains consistently stable Craig-Martin also explores imaging techniques with new materials and technology keeping his work at the forefront of developments as contemporary art practice. The 2015-16 Transience exhibition at the Serpentine Gallery, London, conveyed his repertoire as confident and unique. The exhibition presented paintings on canvas, coloured and linear images drawn upon the walls, digital prints on paper and wallpaper; everything experienced as a coherent and consistent drawing and original colour language. Craig-Martin was an Artist Trustee of Tate from 1989 to 1999, and was elected to the Royal Academy in 2006.
