Encyclopaedia Britannica (2014, p.2) “Ipswich is the county town (seat) and administrative centre of Suffolk.”

I am been taking pictures of Ipswich’s main streets. I have been using the photographs to copy the shape and design of the buildings in to my drawings. It has been useful as it has made the drawings more realistic in terms of design.

In this drawing I have included the front design of the Ancient House. I have made the building a place for eating in the story. We can see Robert Gold and Lacey about to go inside for a lovely meal together. They are very happy as they are going out again, they are wearing nice clothes and are looking forward to a nice evening. We can see other couples inside, having a good time. I also used the roof design of the Ancient House for the lay out of the the roof. The Ancient House is a nice looking building, so I through it would be fun to make it a nice place to eat.

The next drawing I have copied part of a Ipswich building. This one is of Robert Gold’s House and his garden House, which I used the old windows out of the small houses on Nicolas Street. We can see Robert Gold and Lacey going out of the house. The garden house is quite small, but the mansion were they live is a much larger building. There is not a lot of detail in the work as the buildings take up a great deal of the space on the paper. It is a good drawing to have in the story as he introduces the reader to their home environment.

Also looked at The Regent Theatre as I have placed that in to this third drawing so far with Ipswich buildings included in my work. This image is the front of the Ipswich Regent, I have shown the couple and some of the other characters leaving the building. I have make the sky a big part of it with the sun setting, and the clouds. Also put glass gardens outside the theatre to make it look nice. I have placed shadow on the building were the light has not caught it. This adds a realistic look, and I wanted to add this to the detail of the Theatre.

I have looked at John Constable’s Hadleigh Castle (1829) as I wanted to see how Constable had captured buildings in his work. Also wanted to observe his amazing ability for creating the elements and nature in his paintings. Such as the sky and the clouds and were he places the light coming down on the castle, so I could see were the shadows would be. Also how Constable used the grass, which way was it blowing in the wind. So I could see the best way to make my drawings more realistic. Rosenthal (2014, 1) “His landscapes represent a sometimes astonishing capacity to represent natural appearances”. By looking at this painting I can see how to make these elements in my work better. I wanted to look at a building Constable had painted, as it has helped me to see were and how my buildings in my story should be.

All three drawings are created with charcoal. The colour spear is harmony for all the drawings, as they blend well together. There is a good contrast of light and dark. The first drawing has some nice detail work with the charcoal for the roof and the second drawing shows the way the charcoal marks the paper, as there is some nice marks left behind. The third image shows a nice contrast between the sky and clouds.

I really like my drawing of the place were they eat, as I loved the windows, and the fact you could see everyone eating their meal. For the next image I like the fact that the house was close up, so that the reader of the work can see all the brickwork and door framing at the front. For the third image I liked the drawing of the actual building, the Theatre: as it looked quite realistic.

The chairs in the first drawing need to be more accurate and the people need to be more to proportion to their size. The second drawing should have smaller buildings. So the reader can see the hole house, as this would make it a more skilled drawing. The third image is of The Regent Theatre, which the building looks good, but the rest of the piece needs more art put in to it. Twinch (2006, p.126) “The Regent Theatre opened to great enthusiasm in 1929 as a cine-variety hall.” I wanted to use the Regent as it is a famous building of the town. So the reader would notice it in the story.
