Lab. Talks+ is an event happening over 3 sessions – you can come for one, or stay for all three for full art/science immersion. Each event has different speakers to introduce you to different perspectives and ideas surrounding dark matter and more!

Session 1, 2.30 – 5.30pm: Get to grips with dark matters and a virtual laboratory visit

  • Explore Dark Matter with particle astrophysicist Dr. Chamkaur Ghag. Chair of Dark Matter UK, LZ-UK collaboration’s Outreach Officer and lecturer at UCL
  • Artist Libby Heaney will run a session where we will explore the relationship between dark matter and quantum physics through collaborative weaving and improvised story-telling
  • Direct weblink with tour and Q&A to Boulby Underground Laboratory 1100m below ground on the North East coast of England.

Session 2, 6.30-8.30pm:  Perception and Perspectives: Three short talks followed by a panel discussion.

Dr Chiara Ambrosio, UCL, will talk on Art and Science: a Romance of Many Dimensions, will draw on cubism, geometry and mathematics.

Two of the Laboratory of Dark Matters artists will talk about their different approaches to dark matter: Susan Eyre will talk about the ideas behind the whole project and her own work exploring of the origins of paradise and the philosophy of Plato on the shape of the cosmos. Amy Gear will discuss her response to dark matter research through a feminist approach, collaborating with a martial arts instructor and using green screen filming to reference the invisibility of women.

The panel discussion will be chaired by artist Elizabeth Murton and include Dr Chiara Ambrosio, Amy Gear, Dr Chamkaur Ghag, and Libby Heaney (latter two from session 1).

Session 3 Supper and Chats – 8.30+

Round off a day of talks, live web link and panel discussion with a squash and chickpea tagine supper at 8.30pm. It’s an opportunity to continue conversations and chat to others interested in the days themes. There will be work in progress on display from the Laboratory of Dark Matters artists.
