In 1979, the (then) Arts Council of Great Britain implemented the Payment to Artists for Exhibition of Work scheme and set a standard fee of £100 per solo show for artists when exhibiting their work in the public. A lobby in the years prior from artists including Conrad Atkinson, an Artists Union member, had played a significant part in this policy breakthrough.
