Frieze Week 2017: art fairs and events in London

Frieze London
The 2017 edition of Frieze Art Fair features over 160 galleries, with art from over 1,000 artists. This year, the fair is made up of three sections: the main section featuring galleries such as Hauser & Wirth, Victoria Miro and The Modern Institute, Focus, showcasing emerging galleries and artists, and new for 2017, Sex Work: Feminist Art & Radical Politics. Sex Work is curated by independent curator and scholar Alison Gingeras and is dedicated to women artists working at the extreme edges of feminist practice since the 1960s, and the galleries who supported them. In addition, Frieze Projects returns, offering a non-profit programme of new artists’ commissions, as does Frieze Talks, which this year is curated by Hayward Gallery director Ralph Rugoff.

Frieze Masters
A 15-minute walk across Regent’s Park will take you to another vast art fair. Frieze Masters showcases art from the ancient era and Old Masters through to the late 20th century, with this year’s fair bringing together more than 130 exhibitors. Also on offer is Frieze Masters Talks, which features a strong line-up of conversations between international curators and artists, including Marina Abramović, Peter Blake and Luke Syson. Curated by Tim Marlow (artistic director, Royal Academy of Arts, London), it will explore the history of art and its continuing significance in contemporary practice.

Sunday Art Fair
This annual contemporary art fair focuses on new and emerging artists and galleries from around the world. This year’s edition features 25 international galleries exhibiting solo projects or curated group presentations. Located less than ten minutes walk from Frieze Art Fair at the subterranean space Ambika P3, entrance to the fair is free.

1:54 Contemporary African Art
Returning to Somerset House for its fifth edition, 1:54 is dedicated to contemporary African art. Drawing reference to the 54 countries that constitute the African continent, the event showcases 42 international galleries presenting over 130 African and African diasporan artists across the East, South and West Wings of Somerset House. The fair is accompanied by an educational and artistic talks programme, FORUM, curated by Koyo Kouoh and Special Projects.

PAD
This fair brings together 67 galleries showcasing art, design and decorative arts with the concept of cross-collecting. It mixes modern art, photography, design, decorative arts to create a boutique setting. In addition, the PAD London Prize will be awarded by a panel of judges presided over by Jasper Conran. Awards will given in three categories: Best Contemporary Design, Best 20th Century Design, and Best Stand.

Sluice Biennial
Showcasing artist and curator-run galleries and projects, Sluice Biennial focuses on a DIY ethos and collaborative programming. For its fourth edition, it features a large programme of exhibitions, live-performances, screenings and moderated talks by over 25 galleries from as far afield as Canada, Colombia, Germany, Ireland, the USA and from around the UK.

PIY PaintLounge
This salon exhibition, fundraiser and series of conversations features over 40 contemporary painters and arts professionals talking about painting as a part of Sluice Biennial 2017. It is a collaborative project between paintbritain and PaintUnion aiming to bring as many painters as possible together to discuss and celebrate painting in its many and various forms. In addition, PIY PaintLounge is supporting Hospital Rooms, an arts and mental health charity, with a fundraising exhibition of small works. Artists exhibiting include: Broughton and Birnie, Clare Mitten, Mitchell R. Johnson and Charley Peters, and Gavin Turk.

Peckham International Art Fair
This new art fair bills itself as a platform for emerging artists, galleries and curators, and combines local projects by Peckham-based artists with work from artists represented by international galleries. Participants include White Conduit Projects, which represents Japanese and UK-based artists, and Trove54, an online platform promoting contemporary African art. Shape at the Hospital Club
Disability-led arts organisation Shape Arts are holding a contemporary art exhibition and sale at the Hospital Club. There will be 22 works of art on sale, donated by artists in recognition of the legacy of disabled sculptor Adam Reynolds, who Shape Arts’ Adam Reynolds Memorial Bursary is named after. Artworks have been donated by high profile artists including: Fiona Banner, Gary Hume, Gavin Turk, Marc Quinn, Martin Creed and Tim Etchells.

The Other Art Fair
Now up to its 20th edition, The Other Art Fair is a platform for emerging and unrepresented artists, 130 of whom present their work here. Guest curated by Saatchi Art’s Rebecca Wilson, artists are selected by a committee. Highlights include Nottingham-based artist Demi Overton‘s labour intensive drawing, London-based Etienne Clément’s baroque doll houses, and Fife-based artist photographer Sydney Clare Checkland who was recently shortlisted for a Jerwood Visual Arts Artist’s Bursary.

Moniker Art Fair
The theme of Moniker’s eighth edition is ‘Transient Tales’, charting the subculture of urban art that began as far back as the 1920s. This year will see international galleries including Thinkspace Gallery (Los Angeles), Station16 (Montreal) and Gallery Itinerrance (Paris) exhibit, plus site specific and solo installations by Bill Daniel, Labrona, Tim Conlon, Alex Fakso, Ian Kual’li and Laurence Valieres.

Handmade at Kew
Perhaps one of the more unique alternatives to Frieze is taking place at Kew Gardens later in October. The third edition of Handmade at Kew is four-day international contemporary craft event featuring over 200 designer-makers. On sale will be a host of works, including ceramics, jewellery, fashion and textiles, glass, paper, furniture, metalwork, sculpture and interior accessories.
