Events: Projected echoes, archaeological digs, philosophy and the artwork

Warrington Contemporary Arts Festival
The seventh edition of Warrington’s annual contemporary arts festival has a change of format, with the programme taking place over 12 months, with new commissions, exhibitions and events over the course of this period. Currently on show is Holly Rowan Hesson’s projection and sculptural work, Echo; Worn; Ellen Sampson’s exploration of footwear and our attachment to shoes; and Emotional Processing, a new body of work by Warrington Contemporary Arts Festival Open winner Bex Ilsley.

Matters of Life and Mud
Since 2016, Karen Wallis has been artist in residence with the Ness of Brodgar archaeological dig in Orkney for two months every summer. Here, Wallis presents sketches, paintings, sound recordings and films that consider ‘a relationship with what’s found in the ground’. Works from her previous long-term residency that responded to the redevelopment of The Holburne Museum between 2008 and 2011 also form part of this exhibition. An artist’s talk takes place on Sunday 29 October at 3pm.

Paradise Works Launch Weekend
The launch of the newly developed Paradise Works studios on the Salford/Manchester border sees 28 artists open their studios and two exhibitions take place in the gallery. ‘Politics of Paradise’ is an exhibition of site-responsive works that explore utopian ideals. Organised Labour is a new work by Michelle Shields, a result of her recent residency at this new studio complex.

Firmament
For Paul Liptrot, a fascination with the science of the materials he uses is the starting point for his light installations and wall-based works – often ambiguous pieces, which invite the viewer to see beyond their horizon (or firmament).
